How to Handle Tough DEI Conversations
DEI has always been a bit of a sensitive topic, but as the US presidential election draws nearer, DEI and related topics have become quite charged. If you are on the front lines of handling these conversations - even those that are positive - it is easy to feel intimidated or ill-equipped.
This may sound counter-intuitive, but the number one thing to do in these conversations is to demonstrate empathy.
Listening in an empathetic way will ensure
the person you are talking with feels
they’ve been heard and treated with respect.
This helps diffuse a contentious discussion,
and helps you understand other perspectives,
which is invaluable for designing and communicating
your DEI programs.
Empathizing with someone does not mean you are agreeing with them. Instead, it shows you are taking the time to understand their point of view. You are also role modeling respectful behavior, which makes it more likely they will return the favor when you want to speak.
Here are additional recommendations for handling tough conversations:
Pause
Be open to dialog
Actively listen to concerns
Validate by playing back what you heard and asking if that is correct
Correct any misconceptions or misinformation with facts
Thank them for sharing their concerns
Discuss how DEI work helps us live out our company mission and values
Share stories that demonstrate the benefits and positive impacts of DEI
Find ways for them to be included in the work
Escalate if you feel uncomfortable or ill-equipped
